Estimates of the number of slaves in our world today range from 10 to 30 million persons. Accurate numbers are difficult to come by because of the secretive nature of slavery and human trafficking, and because there is a new breed of “slavery deniers” driven by an unwillingness to have government agencies and NGOs intervene in the various fingers of the global sex industry. Nevertheless, everyone tracking the problem agrees that there are more slaves in the world today than ever before in history, and these slaves are all around us. In a city like ours (Tacoma, WA, USA) there are somewhere between 300 and 600 slaves.
